Study At home With NCC Online - A Review*. At the beginning of September I was asked if I would like to review a course from NCC online. I jumped at the chance and wrote a post about what I thought I would get from the course. My expectations were high and I must say the course did not disappoint.
I was given the choice of course to study. I could have chosen anything from Wedding Planning to Autism Awareness. I have been researching my family tree for over eight years and thought the Diploma in Genealogy course would be perfect for me. It is designed for those with no previous knowledge so sounded perfect.
What were my expectations from Studying At home With NCC Online?
1. I could study when it suited me
This worked out perfectly for me. I could just do a little here and there without having to collect lots of resources to begin. Just a lap top and I was off.
2. I could study at my own pace
This was an absolute bonus for me. We all work at different speeds, some modules I quickly completed and others took much longer. What I really enjoyed was not having to submit work for assessment and there were no time constraints. This allowed me to fully explore the course material and further my family history research.
3. Time Management and self discipline
I must say I started off well then work took over and I let it slip for a while as it seemed like a hobby. This wasn't a bad thing at all as I did enjoy it but to manage my time more efficiently I would have liked a guide at the start of each module on how long I could expect it to take.
What have I learnt?
The whole course was really enjoyable and I have learnt so much. I really thought that I would just skim each module and do the exam in a week or two. It is totally possible to complete quickly if you commit the time to it but I didn't allocate any specific time I just dipped in as often as I pleased.
The website is easy to navigate and has a personal dashboard. All the modules are listed to the left and are easily saved as a PDF document.
There is so much information and each module has lots of links to further resources. The only problem I came across was that many of the links were broken. This was more disappointing than a real problem as many websites had redirects and those that didn't were easy to navigate via their own site menu.
Each module states clearly the objectives and all modules delivered. The genealogy course is designed to teach a complete beginner how to research their family tree and this course does just that. If you worked through the course at the end you would have the beginnings of a family tree and the knowledge to expand it. Like all self led learning you get out what you put in. The more that you explore and read around the subject the more you get out of it.
The courses are well thought out and really easy to follow. There are no assumptions so time is not spent looking up meanings or feeling perplexed. The course I chose costs £340 (reduced to £255 at time of writing). The cost covers registration fee, the course, certification fee and tutor support. There are also easy pay options available.
So how did I get on? The exam at the end is easily accessible and is multiple choice. I did have to refer back to the course material for a couple of answers as they were very specific. The result is immediate and if you wish to retake the exam that is possible within minutes of completion.
I passed! Of course I passed. It is a very good course and I worked through it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Unlike some exams I have taken in the past, all the questions were covered by the course work.
I love learning from home and would definitely study another subject with NCC Online. NCC Online have over 300 courses to choose from on their website. If you could choose a course what would it be?
* I was given the course free of charge for the purpose of this review. All opinions are honest and my own.
