Words You'd be happy to never hear again

Words You'd be happy to never hear again

Yep, you have a list too in your head. Words, and phrases, that before 2020 meant nothing or something else altogether. These are my top 7

Nightmare of Washington or Goodbye Donald Trump

Nightmare of Washington to be sung loudly and with passion to Fairytale of New York
(My favourite song ever)

Apologies to The Pogues for stealing your song and my bad lyrics xx

It was 20th November babe
In the Whitehouse
When an old man said he'd make the US great again
Then he said his biggest lie
He'd build a great wall
To keep the Mexicans out
That wasn't his last

He got a helping hand
Came in second to Hills
He trashed her name
He doesn't give a damn
So Goodbye Trump
Take Melania with you
We can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got guns as big as cars
They've got riot shields
The fear is real and present
It's no place for you
When he first took the oath
On a cold November day
He promised them
To make US great again

He's a bully
He's petty
He said storm the City
He told them to fight
He said he was right
The police were encumbered
Security outnumbered
Trump called them special
We watched through the night

The proud boys were singing
Thank you Donald Trump
As the shots were ringing out
For a new day

He's a bum
He's a lump
He's called Donald Trump
Lying his way through every day
You liar, you narcissist
You self centred racist
Goodbye Donald Trump
Lets hope it's your last

The right wing were singing
Thank you Donald Trump
As the shots were ringing out
For a new day

He could have been someone
But he became no-one
He took their dreams away
When he took the oath
He promised everything
He just took it for his own
He's now all alone
Playing golf every day

The right wing were singing
Thank you Donald Trump
As the shots were ringing out
For a new day

Clapping For NHS - Why Bother?

It's 8pm on a Thursday, millions are under lockdown in the UK, but many leave their sofas, open their doors or windows and clap. Some hit saucepans with spoons, some play musical instruments, some just clap. But why? Why bother clapping for people who are just doing their job? Why bother?

I'm Fed Up With Cleaning - Can I stop now please?

I'm Fed Up With Cleaning - Can I stop now please?

I don’t know about you but I’m fed up with cleaning. It was fun but now I'm bored with it. Also I have to keep doing it. When I didn't polish everything to within an inch of it's life, I didn't care about the odd fingerprint. I didn't even notice them. Now everything is shiny I have to polish, polish, polish! I wonder why I do it. I dust, I polish, I sweep but it just gets dirty again.

It's Mrs Hinch's fault. She quickly rose to fame with her perfectly clean house and her unique use of every cleaning product that smelt. I didn’t want to use all the chemicals she used, but still found myself cleaning anything that stood still.

I'm polishing everything until it shines. Taps, toaster, kettle, you name it. If it has a glossy finish I'm there with my polishing cloth. And that’s my point, I don't want to do it anymore.

What’s the point anyway? The kettle didn’t boil water faster, or suddenly make the coffee. It showed no gratitude for all my hard work. Once it was shining and looking lovely it became too posh to boil, it died. Did I kill my kettle with over polishing?

I do not smoke and I don't want your second hand vaping

I-do-not-smoke-and-I-don't-want-your-second-hand-vaping-text-over-image-of-smoke

I do not smoke and I don't want your second hand vaping

The BBC News recently reported a call to lift the ban on vaping in public places. At present people using e-cigarettes, along with smokers,  are not allowed to smoke in enclosed public places. We have a ban on smoking as smoking is bad for our health, e-cigarettes are licensed as a tobacco product and are included in this ban.
I gave up smoking over twenty five years ago and do not want to start passive vaping.

The Perils Of A Long Hot Summer

The Perils Of A Long Hot Summer

I'm a grandmother and can remember the last long hot summer in the UK. It was 1976. I was twenty and had not long moved to Wales after spending a year in Greece. All the summers of my childhood were long and hot, I can't remember a cold wet one before I moved to Wales. I grew up in Hertfordshire, in the East of England just north of London. It has warmer, dryer summers and colder winters than the west.

Is It Bad Parenting To Serve Junk Food?

Is It Bad Parenting To Serve Junk Food?

I never asked this question when my children were little. We just fed them. We fed them junk food and nutritious, healthy, homemade food. They both had healthy appetites and ate whatever we served, well almost. I say almost because we both worked full time it was easier to cook what the children liked. They liked homemade food, cooked from scratch and they liked junk food too.
We rarely had fast food, like McDonalds, as neither Mr P or I actually liked them. They were kept as a treat for the children. They had school dinners (I'm sure they had the notorious turkey twizzlers) and on Fridays we would have a takeaway curry and the children would have pizzas, or fish fingers, or burgers. Whatever their favourite was at the time. We had a chocolate drawer.

When Terrorism Is Too close To Home

When Terrorism Is Too close To Home

I have woken up to horrendous news too often. A terrorist attack aimed at children at a concert or random attacks in London of terrorists murdering people using vehicles. Then I hear of the manslaughter of families asleep in their homes. A fire ripping through a tower block trapping many and killing an unknown number of people. In Portugal families have lost everything due to what appears to be a natural disaster, lightening setting fire to the landscape.

Baby Boomers had it way too easy

Baby-boomers-had-it-easy-word-cloud

Baby Boomers had it way too easy is a phrase bandied about every time pensions or housing are mentioned. (And at the risk of sounding like a pantomime) "Oh no we didn't!".

Baby boomers are post war babies, born in the baby boom between 1946 and 1964. It has been said that we had it too easy, I suppose it depends on what is considered easy and what socio-economic group you belonged to. I don't think I had it easy.

Thoughts on Saturday - Iraq & Afghanistan Memorial and Howard Hodgkin

Thoughts on Saturday

Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial

A memorial to those who fought and died in Iraq and Afghanistan was unveiled on Thursday. It is two Portland stone monoliths with a bronze medallion between. Three sides of the stones are smooth whilst the third is rough hewn, to represent that the conflict is not resolved. The memorial, by sculpture Paul Day, commemorates the contribution by both military and civilians, those who survived and those who died. No names are inscribed, the military that lost their lives are remembered at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Thoughts on Saturday - Child migrants, Sex Education and Sir Philip Green

Last week I didn't publish a Thoughts on Saturday because I couldn't find anything that didn't involve "you know who" and "you know what"! This week the news is slowly becoming more diverse and there are lots of topics that have me thinking.

Mum home schools her kids - by letting them play computer games 7 hours a day
Katie Pybus insists her three children.......who have never learnt the alphabet.....

Amongst all the doom and gloom of Trump and Brexit this was a headline on social media that caught my eye. Apparently a mother home schooled her children by letting them play video games all day. My first thought on looking at the picture underneath the headline was that they looked happy enough and secondly, I bet they can read.

I delved a little further.

Thoughts On Saturday - Gina Miller and Trump

I watched Question Time this week for the first time in ages. I smiled when David Dimbleby said that a viewer had asked for the questions to be anything other than Brexit or Trump. A woman after my own heart. I had stopped watching it as I was totally fed up with everything being about Brexit. Don't get me wrong, if there was any real news then that would be OK but just the same old points being made again and again in the same old way.

Thoughts On Saturday - The NHS and Thundersnow

The NHS.

Many of you know that I am a retired nurse, I was a theatre sister for over 30 years, so the NHS is close to my heart. One of the reasons that I retired was the amount of paperwork that I was expected to do. More paper, more numbers and less about patients. I understand that the government needs figures because they have set targets and these need to be measured. I was saddened to see two headlines this week.

Home Is Where The Heart Is

Each week I join in with #MySundayPhoto, a linky* that showcases photos from around the world. I love looking at all the pictures and commenting on my favourites. It is a great way to spend a Sunday morning.
This week I came across Catherines Cultural Wednesdays blog and her picture was titled Home Is Where The Heart Is. She questions where her home is and asks her readers where they feel is home.

I thought on New Years Eve it would be appropriate to say goodbye to some of the celebrities that have died this year. This isn't a complete list, it's a small list of those that had an influence in my life.

Aleppo

I don't think any one could avoid the horrors of Aleppo this week. I am in a quandary though. I do not know who to support. As I understand it, it's a civil war in Syria between the government forces and rebels. Rebels who rose up four years ago in the Arab Spring and one of their strongholds is the second city of Syria, Aleppo. The government forces are being backed by Russia and the rebels by the USA. So the rebels are good then? Well no, part of the rebel group is ISIS and they are bad.

Thoughts on Saturday #1

thoughts-on-saturday-bear-and-cardigan-text-over-image-of-another-place-anthony-gormley-crosby-beach

I used to like Question Time on the BBC. I loved shouting at the TV, disagreeing with the panelists and ranting on Facebook with like minded (or not so like minded) friends. Then we had Brexit.

David Cameron and Brexit have a lot to answer for, not least that QT is now so boring. Blah, blah, Brexit, blah, blah! Just SHUT UP I want to scream.
