Number 10, Cardiff Pre-Theatre Supper - A Review

We were invited* to review the Pre-Theatre Supper menu at No.10 Cardiff. No.10 Cardiff is a luxury boutique hotel on Cathedral Road and backs onto Sophia Gardens. We were going to The Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival to see The Vicar Of Dibley and this is the ideal location.

No.10, Cardiff is very close to the City Centre and literally a minutes walk from the venue and so our meal was relaxed without the usual clock watching.

The restaurant has a set evening menu throughout the year and service starts at 5pm so is convenient for events at other venues throughout Cardiff City Centre.

It had been a very warm day so when we arrived we were hot but the restaurant was cool and we taken straight to our table and offered iced water. This was very welcome.

For starters I had Ham Hock, Leek & Perl Las Quiche, Dressed Watercress Balsamic. It was amazing. It was the best quiche I have ever tasted. It was served warm and the filling was soft and flavoursome. The pastry was crumbly and fantastic. Mr P tried some and he agreed.

Mr P had the Prawn Cocktail. The Prawn Cocktail was just as expected. Lots of tasty prawns with very fresh salad.

This meal had a great start.

For mains I debated over the lamb or fishcake. Homemade fishcakes are one of my favourites and it won. I had Homemade Fishcake with Wilted Spinach, Asparagus & Poached Hens Egg. It was a rare treat to have a proper homemade fishcake.

Mr P chose the Pea & Goats Cheese Arancini, Parmesan, Rocket & Beetroot Salad. He absolutely loved the salad, the beetroot was so tasty. We shared our mains, not something we usually do, but we enjoyed them both so much we had half of each. Neither of us had had Arancini (risotto rice balls) before but I will definitely be trying it again.

The set menu is for two or three courses. We rarely have dessert as they are always too filling. For the hungry there is a choice of Eton Mess or Chocolate Brownie. Also on the menu is Affogato. Again neither of us had tried this before but it sounded like the perfect end to a delicious meal. We were not disappointed. Gelato with expresso coffee to pour over. I love expresso coffee, I always drink it when I am abroad as they just know how to make a decent cup so I was delighted that the coffee was extra strong and slightly bitter. It made an excellent accompaniment to the sweetness of the ice cream. This is certainly something I shall be trying again. Maybe I will add just a touch of Amaretto.

We enjoyed a glass of house wine each with the meal. I chose a Pinot Grigio IGT Villa Albini Veneto, Italy and Mr P had Paso Ancho Merlot Reserva Central Valley, Chili. Wines are available by the glass and bottle and the wine list has something for all tastes. Wines from the Old World to the New; including sparkling Champagnes, Chablis, Chardonnay and many other favourites.

No.10 is just a stones throw from the Cardiff Open Air Festival.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The restaurant is calm and chic. Hung on the walls are original paintings of scenes around Wales (all for sale) and the service was faultless. The food tasted freshly cooked and beautifully presented. This would be a wonderful place for a romantic meal for two.

We found it was the perfect place eat before catching the show at Cardiff Open Air Festival. Even if you are not visiting the theatre this is a lovely place to eat, I am sure you will not be disappointed.

*We were given a complimentary meal and glass of wine in return for a review. All opinions are honest and my own.
