Our Weekly Journal 7th August 2017 - Trains and Bikes

We had a lovely two days with Bear. Tuesday the sun shone so we jumped into the car and went to Forest Farm. It's not a farm now but a nature reserve with a canal, cycle tracks and woodland. The tracks join up with the Taff Trail which is totally traffic free and runs along side the River Taff.

I promised Bear that he would see some insects, he was quite keen as long as it wasn't spiders! Not seconds after getting out of the car we spotted a hairy caterpillar, Bear watched it leave the road and go into the grass.

Then we headed towards the canal and were rewarded with a sighting of a kingfisher. They move too quickly for me to get a photo, just a glimpse, then a flash of the brightest blue you can imagine.

We also saw lots of butterflies and flowers.

Bear loved riding his bike on the trail and through the woods. He can go so fast that we are seriously thinking of getting a bigger car so we can all take our bikes. I do not think it will be long before he can upgrade to a bike with pedals, then I will never catch him.

We let him get ahead, then wait for us to catch up. I have tried to get him to turn around and come back, so he rides twice as far as we walk. This week he caught on and understood exactly what `I meant. He was so good. As long as I do not let him get too far away he comes back. If he gets too far he can't hear me shouting and I have to run to catch him, that's OK going uphill but not so good when he's free wheeling down.

The railway line from Cardiff runs through Radyr and onwards to the Valleys. It travels beside the River Taff and is visible from the Taff Trail. Bear loved seeing the trains, which are quite frequent too.

We stopped for a snack and a rest at Mellin Griffiths. This is an old water mill but has been completely refurbished and now houses a hydro electric unit powered by the weir. There are fish ladders to allow the fishes pass and although there is no cafe or refreshments there are picnic tables and benches for the weary.

Then on Wednesday it rained, and rained and rained. So we spent most of the day indoors. Although we are not actively potty training, Bear told me he didn't need to wear nappies anymore and then went on his potty lots of times. He even had two poo's, he hasn't wanted to have a poo on a potty before so we are hopeful that this is the beginning. One of my worries is being out and about, at the moment Bear goes every few minutes and is fine wearing pants as long as he isn't too far from the potty. I have heard about travel potties although never had them when mine were small. I was lucky enough to be sent one for review from Cheeky Rascals. It looks like a little suitcase with a ladybird design.

I have to wait until tomorrow to see what Bear thinks of it and we all know how fickle toddlers are. A full review will appear on the blog in the next week or so.

It is said that all babies and toddlers need is an empty box, I think that may be true. Bear played for ages with his "tunnel".
