Do We Really Get Our Intelligence From Our Mothers?

Do-We-Really-get-our-intelligence-from-our-mothers-vintage-image-of-mother-and-son

On social media last week were headlines declaring that we get our intelligence from our mothers. How true is this and do we really get our intelligence from our mothers?

Our weekly round-up is mostly about cakes. It's always a favourite subject of mine except this week Bear has had a cough and cold, so it's coughs, colds and cakes.

#MySundayPhoto Number 39

#MySunday-Photo-Number-39-toddler-stood-by-wall-sticker-looking-at-tag-from-stool.

#MySundayPhoto Number 39 is Bear being measured. Well not being measured really. He would not stand against the wall and was much more interested in the label on my box.

His room in our house still has lots of my things in it. It was my craft room before Bear was born. I had put a height measure sticker on the wall and thought it would be fun to measure Bear. He thought it would be more fun to pull the label off the box. I think he's about 90 cm tall.

A Guide To DNA testing for Family Research

a-guide-to-DNA-testing-for-family-research-text-on-illustration-of-a-tree

Would you like to have your DNA tested but not sure where to start? A guide to DNA testing for family research will describe the different tests, who they are best for and what you will learn from each.

DNA and family history are a popular way to learn more about your roots. Those of us interested in family history would really love to know exactly where we came from. That's one of the reasons we do the research. We would all love to be related to someone famous or to royalty. A Russian great grandmother sends thoughts of being a descendant of the Tsars or maybe we have a surname that leads us back to the Vikings.

How to Make Cup Cakes With A Toddler

Bear loves Hey Duggee. We love Hey Duggee and thought it would be a good idea to earn our cake making badge. I mean how difficult would it be with a toddler who has a mind of his own? It's actually easy, peasy although very, very messy. Once you have accepted that it will be messy then it is great fun too.

Steinbeck And Shaw Cardiff - A Review

Steinbeck and Shaw* Cardiff is a bar and club located right in the heart of Cardiff City Centre on Greyfriars Road. It's website promises

"a first class and personal service direct to your private table"

so when I was invited, along with four other South Wales bloggers to try their new menu, we jumped at the chance.

An Indian Summer

An-Indian-Summer-image-of-toddler-with-hose-pipe

This is my favourite photo of the week. I did get totally drenched but we really did laugh. It was about 8am and the sun was out and it was so warm. We just had to play in the sun. It looks like we are going to have an Indian Summer.

City Of The Unexpected - Cardiff Celebrates Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl was born in Cardiff 100 years ago and to celebrate Cardiff put on a spectacular event, City Of The Unexpected - Cardiff Celebrates Roald Dahl. The details were kept quiet and no-one knew what to expect. We just had to go into the city centre to find out. Unfortunately 35,000 other people thought they'd go too. The buses were overflowing and the traffic at a standstill. The events run late so children were stood in the heat crying and bored. When it did start we couldn't see because of the crowds.

Despite all this we actually really enjoyed it. We had no children or dogs with us. What is it with dog lovers that they bring their dogs into the city centre, amongst huge crowds on a boiling hot day?

We found calm and peace in some pubs and chilled. We did lots of people watching and got stuck in some horrendous crowds too. Thank goodness we didn't have children is all we kept saying as we sipped our ice cold lager in the blistering heat.

So for those of you who didn't go or did go and saw nothing here's my gallery of what we captured.

Cwm Carn Forest - A Toddler Explores

Cwm-Carn-forest-A-Toddler-Explores-text-on-image-of-toddler-and-metal-cutout-of-a-dear

Anyone who grew up in South Wales would know Cwm Carn Forest but we all knew it as Cwm Carn Forest Drive. A road around the mountains through the forest. Then a deadly disease hit the Larch trees and many had to be felled. The Drive became a walk, through beautiful woodlands and along a sculpture trail. Sadly this has now gone too and cars are restricted to the car park and only hikers and mountain bikes get to explore the bare mountain top. We hadn't researched this when we decided to take Bear for our Cwm Carn Forest - A Toddler Explores post and had hoped to walk the sculpture trail. Bear was also having a bad week with teething but the start look promising and Bear happily posed in front of the way marker sign.

Bute Park ~ Pontcanna Fields - A Toddler Explores

Bute-Park-Pontcanna-fields-a-toddler-explores-text-on-image-of-toddler-on-bike-in-avenue-of-trees

We are very lucky living in Cardiff we have so many green spaces that are open to the public and have a variety of landscapes.

Bute Park is a stretch of parkland from Cardiff Castle in the city centre out towards Llandaff. The Taff Trail cycle route and the River Taff run through it.

Tantrums To Smiles

Bear with the most adorable smile and wearing an appropriate hoody

Tantrums to smiles! That really does sum up this week. There will be no photos of Bears tantrums for lots of reasons, mostly that I never think to take a photo when he's having one I just think "How do I stop this!" and because this is a happy place.
Suffice to say that this week has been so very hard. I really thought that Bear must have something wrong, like an earache or sore throat but a visit to the doctors gave him the all clear. We are guessing that it is the terrible twos and teething.

#MySundayPhoto Number 37

#MySundayPhoto Number 37 was taken in Cwm Carn Forest. It's not a very good photo as I was just taking a quick snap of the direction board for my write up later.

As I lifted my phone to take the shot Bear ran into the picture and posed. I just love his cheeky grin and it did make me wonder if this is unique to bloggers or do all toddlers do this?

How to Avoid Baby Name Regret

How-to-avoid-baby-name-regret-text-on-image-of-Newborn-baby-asleep

Many children start school for the first time this week. Will they be the child with the funny name or one of the many Amelia's or Oliver's? When you call their name in the playground will you wince or beam with pride? Mumsnet conducted a survey and it seems that 1 in 5 parents regret their choice of baby's name. There are those that wait until the baby is born to decide and those that have always known what names they wanted and have the clothes and nursery ready and personalised. If you are about to have a baby and really do not want to make a mistake then read on and I will show you how to avoid baby name regret.

#MySundayPhoto Number 36 is of Bear playing in the grounds of the magnificent Dyffryn House in the Vale of Glamorgan. We are frequent visitors to this gem which is managed by the National Trust. They have so many volunteers that the grounds are just beautiful.

We have visited the house but only without Bear. The house doesn't open until 12 midday and we like to go early and get back home for Bear's afternoon nap. Maybe in the winter when it's a bit cold Bear will do a tour of the house.
