Big Garden Birdwatch 2016

More than half a million people from across the UK are set to take part by counting the birds in their gardens over the weekend of 30-31 January 2016.
It just takes an hour of looking into the garden and counting the birds you see. Then sending the information back to the RSPB.

Its great fun and helps them understand if any of our native species are in decline or thriving. Children love it too. They can spot the birds and count them.

I found it best to have a bird table with food and to invite birds into my garden before the event. Unfortunately my bird table was taken down when we rearranged the garden and my neighbour has three cats so I have to be careful how I attract birds.

The RSPB will send you a free pack but if you haven't requested one yet it may not reach you in time so it can be down loaded here. By requesting a pack you also get a £5 discount code for their shop.

You can even fill in the form as you watch on a laptop, tablet or phone at

Just some of the birds you may see in your garden.

I'll post what I see next week, but one year I saw nothing! I think the cats were watching too!

Are you going to join in? I'd love to hear how you get on.

  1. T & I are joining in, we do it each year. I really enjoy it although all we see are sparrows and doves :) can't wait to see how you get on xx

    1. One year I had a fantastic watch. Lots of different birds then another year I saw nothing! I hope I get a good one this weekend. Good luck to you both xx

  2. We've got a bird garden and feeder but hardly ever get birds. If we were home we would've joined in. There's beautiful coloured birds over here in aus in the garden x

    1. I found that if you have a resident blackbird and Robin the like to keep their territory free of other birds! We have a lot of magpies and they are such bullies too. I can imagine the birds in Aus are colourful. Do they have parrots?

  3. We don't have much of a garden but do have an allotment so will need to get down there and join in.

  4. Let's hope the weather is kind to us then :-)

  5. I'd love to do this but we don't have a you think an allotment counts?! #abitofeverything

    1. Absolutely! Anywhere, a park, a piece of wasteland anywhere would be great :-)
